How to Re-Salt Pretzels

The star ingredient of pretzels, traditionally, is salt. Big ole clear sharp-edged ROCK SALT, and plenty of it.

Back in the late 70's, early 80's there was a big freakout over salt in our diets. Snack companies all reduced salt in the products, but pretzels were specifically demonized, and they almost completely removed the salt. Mr. Salty, a very popular Nabisco product, was completely taken off the market.

To this day, I can not find ANY commercial pretzels made the old way. Examining a new bag of pretzels, most have nothing on them, some have one to three tiny bits of salt.

I found a way to fix it.

Put your boring, shiny saltless pretzels in a cooking tray in a layer. Get out a spray bottle of water. Lightly mist them, and go to town with your pink rock salt grinder. Get fancy and do some onion powder and celery salt. Repeat. Cook in oven at 225 for 30-60 minutes or till everything is crispy again.

PRESTO, properly salted pretzels. FINALLY. You are welcome! :)
