Bratwurst and Wild Rice

Uncle Ben's Mushroom Long Grain and Wild Rice, with a beer-braised Johsonville bratwurst with peppercorns and cloves, as I hope my Wisconsin and German friends would approve, then grilled on low for about 8 minutes to caramelize the outside perfectly.

Meanwhile, cooked half a white onion in 2 tablespoons bacon grease, then added one finely diced clove of garlic. Dropped in a medium egg and scrambled on low heat. Next, somebody gave me a can of smoked almonds, this is as good a time as any! Chopped up a small handful and tossed that in.

Added the liquid, it calls for 2 1/4 cup water, I used 1 can of consomme for part of that. If we're going to go all out, let's go! This has plenty of protein and carb, but kind of short on veg, so I tossed in a handful of frozen peas, which is about all I had on hand besides onions.

Simmered per directions for 25 minutes, topped with sliced brat.

For an impromptu kitchen sink meal, this was pretty excellent! Rich, flavorful, the smokey almonds and nutty wild rice go great together. Bonus, I think this is still in the $2-ish meal territory.
