Big John's Baked Beans Copycat Recipe

Big John's Beans 'N Fixins was a very delicious prepared baked beans product which was recently discontinued. I played with a copycat recipe and I'll never change a thing in it! Yummmm.
Edit: Perhaps I should have thought this out a bit more and incorporated a copycat Manwich recipe and used actual real food for the whole thing. Next time!

1 cup canned Manwich sloppy joe mix
A generous handful of diced thick cut cooked bacon
1 tablespoon sugar
3 teaspoons molasses
3 teaspoons dried minced onion
1/4 teaspoon salt
pinch of dry mustard
A few grinds of black pepper
1 28 oz. can Baked Beans (Bush's, Van Camp)

Mix it all together, let it sit at least a half hour for the onion to rehydrate and flavors to mix.

  1. I made this recipe for Fourth of July dinner but I had to substitute DelMonte sloppy joe sauce because that's what the store had on the shelf. I made the sauce yesterday and cooked it up with the beans in the crock pot this afternoon, letting them simmer for about three hours. The result wasn't exactly as I remember Big John's—the DelMonte sauce had a little smokier flavor—but the beans were darned good and there was precious little left over, which is always a sign of success.

    1. Thanks, Human! I just now saw your comment 3 years later as I'm making up a batch now. Boy that little can on top of Big John's was magic. I think most of it is the dried onions. It's nice to share this simple recipe for people who remember. :)
